A TALE OF TWO CITIES
At first glance, it may seem like Paris and Beijing have very little in common to the unwary observer. But when taking a closer look, the City of Lights and the Celestial City actually share an uncanny number of similarities.
Few capitals have had such an ability to encapsulate the heart and soul of their respective nations for so long: Paris and Beijing have been undisputed political and cultural hubs for much of the past millennium, and if one was to play a game of resemblances, it could go on forever. Isn’t the Louvre the French equivalent of the Forbidden City, and the Summer Palace the Chinese counterpart to Versailles? Weren’t both cities home to absolute monarchies, and revolutions that changed the course of history and the face of the earth? At once aristocratic and plebeian, serene and passionate, resolutely contemporary and anchored in tradition, Paris and Beijing are much more than just prime urban landscapes: they are the very essence of France and China. And that knack for capturing the Zeitgeist has not faded away in the 21st century, as they remain resolutely ahead of the game in a fast-changing world.
For all these reasons, Maison Goyard is particularly proud and pleased to open a boutique in Beijing. Such a truly exceptional city deserved a truly exceptional venue, a treasure trove where past and present gracefully intertwine and result in a timeless and authentic feel. Right in the heart of smart and bustling Guomao, Beijing’s central business district, the Goyard boutique is located in the China World Trade Center, the city’s largest building complex and premier retail destination, reputed as “The Place Where China Meets the World”. From now on, it will also be the place where Goyard meets China. The in-store decoration is in keeping with Goyard’s exclusive “Comptoir de vente” concept: all Goyard boutiques worldwide are designed to recreate the intimate atmosphere of our Parisian historic flagship store at 233, rue Saint-Honoré, and aim to provide customers with the same unique shopping experience. But Goyard’s Beijing boutique will also boast exclusive features, such a cosy boudoir-like area, a rare Goyard Heritage Collection display cabinet dating from the early 20th century, and a state-of-the-art polished brass and copper frieze running along the façade, which was inspired by original designs from the Goyard archives.
To celebrate its opening, the Goyard boutique will also offer a selection of limited edition creations to be found nowhere but in Beijing: staple bags such as the Sainte Lucie, the Marquises and the 233 will be available in garnet fine Taurillon leather -a nod to the significance of the colour red in Chinese culture, which symbolises wealth and good luck- whilst the iconic Saigon bag will reveal a new found splendour dressed in a robe of emerald Posorus crocodile hive (the most precious pelt in the world) as a tribute to the immemorial passion of the Chinese for Jade, and a promise of perfection, beauty and longevity.
